North and South New Zealand

Divided into two mainland lands – the North and the South Islands – New Zealand is a deceptively diverse and complex destination that rewards first-time and repeat visitors alike. The North Island is less visually dramatic than its southern counterpart, but is home to about two-thirds of the country’s residents. Many of the major urban centers are here, including the capital city of Wellington and the increasingly dynamic city of Auckland. But nature is still an important factor, thanks to the volcanoes, thermal zones and the magnificent Bay of Islands.

About New Zealand

The South Island is home to fewer people than the North Island, but inversely has more spectacular scenery. Empty beaches, towering mountain ranges, glaciers, fjords, wide open spaces – it’s all here. Outdoor enthusiasts can choose from tramping (hiking), cycling, climbing, whitewater rafting, caving, zorbing, skydiving, bungee jumping and more. Christchurch, a city that has bounced back from earthquake damage with extraordinary creativity, is also here.

New Zealand is one of the cleanest and greenest countries in the world today. There are 14 national parks across the country, and almost a quarter of New Zealand is protected land. There is a cultural revival that is seeing wildlife, wine and local films, literature and art gain increasing attention.
